The history of websites begins in 1989 with the invention of the World Wide Web by British computer scientist Sir Timothy John "Tim" Berners-Lee. Berners-Lee developed the three main technologies needed to create websites:

  • HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP): A protocol used to transfer data from a web server to a web client.
  • HyperText Markup Language (HTML): A programming language used to create web pages.
  • Uniform Resource Locator (URL): A unique address used to identify a web page.

In 1991, Berners-Lee launched the first website in the world, info.cern.ch. This website contained information about CERN and the World Wide Web project.
